Biography

Athena is not just a therapy dog; she is a beacon of hope and resilience for those in need at Guardian Training Service. Once a fragile soul, weighing only 26 pounds, Athena was rescued from a life of abuse by the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center. Adopted by her dedicated handler, Pete Ungaro, she has transformed into a powerful symbol of recovery and strength.

Having endured severe physical and emotional trauma from her past, Athena now thrives in an environment filled with love and support. She regularly joins her handler at various training sessions, critical incident responses, peer support gatherings, and wellness activities, playing an essential role in alleviating stress, anxiety, and depression for many.

Athena's journey is a profound testament to the remarkable resilience that both animals and humans can exhibit when provided with compassionate care. Her story illustrates that resilience is not just a trait; it’s a vital force that empowers individuals to lead fulfilling and meaningful lives.
