Therapy Dog
Turkey
Biography
Turkey’s journey is nothing short of remarkable. Rescued by the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center, he was found wandering alone in a park, his face swollen and in distress. It wasn't long before he received a diagnosis of Craniomandibular Osteopathy (CMO), a rare and painful genetic bone disease that affects the cranial bones and lower jaw in young dogs.
CMO typically begins in pups aged 4 to 7 months, leading to episodes of debilitating pain as new bone growth occurs around the head and jaws. But Turkey's story didn’t end there. Officer Briana Fluhr, touched by his resilience, adopted him and committed herself to his well-being. With an abundance of love, time, and a rigorous medication regimen, Turkey gradually transformed from a suffering stray into a thriving companion.
Today, Turkey has taken on a new role as a therapy dog with the Guardian Training & Consulting family. His presence is not just a testament to his survival, but a beacon of hope. He participates in various trainings, critical incident responses, peer support events, and wellness activities, bringing joy and comfort to those around him. Turkey's journey from trauma to triumph inspires everyone he meets, proving that love and support can overcome even the toughest challenges.
